Merchandise page

Although responsible for the merchandise portion of this website, the bulk of my airplay not including Blues Element, and my veritable gold mine of film score material, the reality of the situation is that the Jamie Browning Band as a gigging rock band is, at least at the moment, on indefinite hold.

For one thing, I really, really, REALLY wanted to find a different band name, and I'm sure that other Jamie Browning Band would like that too. For another, the group we've had for the last few years amicably dissolved in 2003 when one member quit and another started a family. The timing wasn't bad however, because Edgar and I were both more than dabbling in our other projects while squeezing in the odd writing session and even odder acoustic performance together. A new "Jamie" album is mostly written, but money has yet to rain from heaven. New members for rock-show-style gigging and recording would be far easier to come by than cold, hard cash.

Anyway, if you already have the following 3 cds and were visiting in order to check on the progress of #4, well, what can I say? Have you heard of Blues Element? They have a great new album...

If you don't already have 'em all, well, why not??? (uh, oh, here comes the hard sell… time to switch over to 3rd person again for the descriptive lure…)

SONGS OF SATURNALIA

Songs of Saturnalia PHOTO: Graham Kennedy

Jamie's first solo album "SONGS OF SATURNALIA" contains 13 tracks plus surprises, written mostly during her time with the band Saturnalia. The album was recorded at Wellesley Sound in Toronto and mixed at Wellesley and Phase One with engineers Jeff McCulloch and Walter Sobczak respectively, and producer extraordinaire Derrol Flynn (Daryl Purdy). Along with past, present and future band members Jamie was joined by stellar guest artists, weaving a wonderful web of musical intrigue to accompany her powerful vocal and lyrical creations. Ranging from raunch to sweet innocence, strong moods are created as her subtly subversive lyrics melt into the richly textured soundscapes.

In addition to musical collaborations, the album boasts unique approaches to other forms of artistic expression. In the poetic vein, Jamie co-wrote the vocals of "Rien Que Le Silence" with Cyril Prono, aka Indy, a poet visiting from France. Jamie wrote the vocal melody and Indy wrote the actual words, amazingly to her exact number of syllables. Original artwork for the cd booklet was created by international sculptor Pancho Sardinha, who was given by Jamie lyrics, premixes and an invitation to interpret the songs visually. His use of lush, rich pastels is a gorgeous compliment to the music and is integral to Jamie's layout and design, which also incorporates photos from a previous collaboration with sculptor Maddalena Di Gregorio.

MYTH CONCEPTION

PHOTO: Stephanie Cormier

Myth Conception "MYTH CONCEPTION", recorded and mixed at Toronto's Audiofile Productions, saw Jamie team once again with producer Derrol Flynn and a crew of accomplished and talented musicians. Derrol also handled engineering duties this time around, and they both quite enjoyed the freedom of locking themselves away in the studio for days on end to play with all the toys.

Still being in transition from Saturnalia to the Jamie Browning Band, Jamie chose to include a few old gems along with new material. Reflecting her many influences while tying them all together, the album's 14 tracks add up to a thoroughly unified tribute to Jamie's rich and haunting sense of melody and musical sensibility. From the non-traditional roots of "Millennium Blues", the gospel-dipped "I Am Torn", the funky "You Got That Right" the gothic drama of "Vainglorious" and the reggae-cabaret of "Elysian Fields" there's something for everyone on this album. Jamie also invited Pancho to again contribute album artwork and she chose joyous and sombre charcoal drawings to compliment her black and white "colour" scheme.

IMMORAL OF THE STORY

Immoral of the Story With the exception of a slice of AmoebA QuichE and one Song of Saturnalia, all the material on "IMMORAL OF THE STORY" was written by and Jamie and Edgar (LeBel). Although they were more than pleased with Derrol's work on Jamie's first 2 albums, Jamie and Edgar decided to produce this album themselves. From song idea right through to cd design, "Immoral Of The Story" has their effort stamped into every atom. Recorded and mixed with their band at Toronto's Rogue Studios with engineer Mark deBoer, the album's 16 tracks take the listener on 16 journeys; from light to dark and from lush to stark. Tales (some of them true!) of hope and despair, love and death, life and crime play out against a soundscape that morphs through pop-rock-alt-prog-reggae-jazz-country-goth and beyond. "Brick To The Head", "Last Night in Texas" "Leave Tonight" and "You'd Never" are all evidence of Jamie's recent travels.

Pancho was out of the country at "design concept time", so Jamie had to look for another artist to create an image for each song. She found Mark Ciale, who painted a delightfully bright and dark collage of 12 of the songs for the front cover using the lyrics and rough mixes as his point of reference. Four single paintings grace the back of the cd booklet, and a game is born: guess which image goes with each song.
